Ruching Gone Wild

Have you ever had a brilliant idea to make something and when you were done, it didn’t turn out at all like you expected?

That happens a lot around here!

But hey, you’ll never know

If you never try, right?

When Loren and I set out to put her room together, she told me she wanted to have a WWE and Dodgers theme.

You see, Loren loves WWE and the Dodgers.

That’s wrestling. And baseball.

Not exactly very feminine themes for a young woman’s room…

So when I saw this ruched comforter online here I thought it would be the perfect look for softening up all that SmackDown and Wrestlemania.

We found a Dodgers blanket that had an aqua background and we used that as inspiration for the colors on the bed.

Then we found a king-sized linen/cotton duvet cover in aqua.

She has a twin bed and my plan was to ruche (gather) it up to twin size. Genius, right??

I stretched elastic and stitched it in even rows to the inside of the duvet cover.

I think where I went wrong was making it too full. The king size duvet cover measured 110 inches wide and I needed to gather it up to 65 inches. That’s almost 4 feet of extra fabric gathered up on it.

It looks like ruching on steroids!

The top doesn’t look so bad. But the sides look like a balloon swag window treatment from the 1980s.

I don’t think the 1980s is really a decade of decorating I ever want to revisit.

And Loren says it’s really heavy to sleep under.

So…. out came all that elastic.

And I cut it down to the 65-inch twin size she needed. And put the fill back back in.

And added a ruffled bedspread

Now that’s more like it!

Much better don’t you think?

But then…

The other day I saw this Kantha-stitched coverlet. here

How cute is that?!?

Do you think I should try Kantha stitching her coverlet??

How many make-overs can one duvet cover have?

I’ll keep you posted!
