Let's Talk Toilets

Yes, The Toilet. The Commode. The John. The Porcelain Throne. I could go on…

Ok, I won’t.

But I found out something really A M A Z I N G today. And I just had to tell you about it.

How old would you say this toilet is?

Doesn’t it look like we just brought it home and took it out of the box?

Look how clean and shiny it is!

Believe it or not this commode is not brand new.

It had a water ring. And hard water stains all down the inside of the bowl. And paint on the tank.

It doesn’t look that bad in the photos - but trust me, it was not pretty!

BTW this is a shot of it AFTER it was cleaned with toilet bowl cleaner — so it’s CLEAN. But it’s STAINED.

I wanted to buy a new one.

I did not want to put that nasty thing back in our nice shiny new (remodeled) bathroom!

But Mr. Redoux said we really should keep this one because it works great.

And hey, I’m all about saving money.

So I did a little research. And I found out from Jessica at theforkedspoon.com who heard from someone at Home Depot about the best thing to use for cleaning water rings and stains from toilet bowls.

And let me tell you — it works like magic!!

Here’s what you need:

Bar Keepers Friend Cleanser

Fine Grit Drywall Sanding Screens (Go figure!)

That’s it.

You’re going to want to wear rubber gloves because you’re working with cleanser and screens. And, well, you’ve got your hands in the toilet….

Cut the screen into smaller manageable squares for scrubbing. (I don’t think ours was the finest grit you can get but it’s what we had on hand and it worked great.)

Sprinkle the Bar Keepers onto a small area in the bowl. Use the screen with the Bar Keepers and a little water to gently scrub away at the stains. I found that a paste-like consistency worked the best. Don’t scrub too hard or you could scratch the porcelain. It’s better to go over it a couple of times than to try to get it all off in one shot and risk scratching. Don’t forget the sides way up under the rim.

Rinse.

Stand back and admire.

Pat yourself on the back.

So now you heard it from me. Who heard it from theforkedspoon.com. Who heard it from Home Depot…
