Stay At Home Decorating

So how’s everybody doing???

We’re over 3 weeks into SHELTERING IN PLACE at our house.

I’m finding that staying home really isn’t much of an issue for me. I’m a homebody and I work from home so this part is pretty easy for me.

But we were literally a day or two away from demoing our hall bath to start renovating that room when all this hit. Now that’s on hold because I don’t think I really want to be running out to Home Depot or the tile store in the middle of a pandemic…

So I’ve been puttering around the house looking for little decorating projects that I can do with things that I already have here.

And here are some things I came up with:

HANG A PICTURE OR SIGN ON A CHAIN

This chain was part of an old necklace. I cut a piece to length, painted it black and screwed it to the top corners on the back of the frame. You could also do this with ribbon or twine or cording. So much more interesting than just a frame hanging on the wall…

I did the same thing with this Le Bain sign in Loren’s bath. I used a chain from a necklace to hang it. No need to paint it — it’s already a kind of a dull brass color that’s just right.

MAKE A MESSY BED

It’s actually a style.

You can read all about how to do it HERE

MAKE A WREATH

We have 2 grapevines in our yard. And every year in the fall they need to be cut back. So a couple of years ago I used the vines to make this wreath. Now I realize that not many people have grapevines in their yard. But maybe you have some kind of vine growing around that you could use. Or you could make a wreath out of twigs. Just attach them to a form made of wire or cardboard. You could also add some faux flowers for more of a spring look.

PLANT A SUCCULENT

Do you have any succulents in your yard? Do you know how easy they are to propagate?? I just cut some stems and stuck them in some potting soil and gave it a little water and —ta-da! New house plant. And they only need water about once a month. Sadly, this seems to be the only plant I can keep alive in my house…

BRING IN BRANCHES

This is a broken branch from a pepper tree that I found in the street. I just put it in a decorative bottle. And instant decor! You could also bring in any kind of leafy or flowering branch and put it in a vase. Or hot glue faux blossoms to a bare branch. Endless possibilities!

PAINT SOMETHING

Not too long ago I was really desperate for something to put next to the other side of the bed. So I went looking through our storage. This is the bottom of a 2-piece oak cabinet that we’ve had for about 30 years. It’s pretty small scale and I’m never going to use it in this house.

At least not the way it was…

A few coats of chalk paint and a wax finish later and…

it’s a good temporary piece for this side of the bed until I can find the perfect dresser I’m looking for.

REARRANGE THE FURNITURE

I’ve been needing a comfortable chair in my office where I can sit and have my morning smoothie and spend some quiet time.

So I took this chair and ottoman from the living room and put it in here.

It’s amazing how it transformed the space!

It’s so much warmer and cozier.

I still need to get a rug for in there but it’s fine for now. (Because like I said, pandemic……)

I hope I’ve given you some inspiration to ‘shop your home’ (and your yard) and see what you can come up with to change up your surroundings. And just maybe brighten your spirits a little.

Because truly, now more than ever, THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME.
