How To Style Throw Blankets

(this post contains affiliate links)

In case you hadn’t noticed,

pillows and throws

are my jam!

I love a cozy throw —

knitted, fur, linen, gauzy, chenille…

With fringe, without fringe…

And even though Spring is knocking at the door,

evenings can still get chilly enough

to need to snuggle up

with a comfy throw blanket.

So today I’m sharing my tips for

how to style throw blankets

so we can keep them nearby

for whenever we need them.

First of all,

where are some good places to throw your throws?

I’m glad you asked!

Here are some of my favorite places:

In a basket

On an ottoman

On a ladder

Wherever you put them, throws give your room a warm inviting feeling.

They’re the extra layer of texture, color and style that add interest to your space.

So here are my best tips for how to style throw blankets:

FOLDED AND STACKED

Pile up a few neatly folded quilts, blankets and throws in an armoire or on a bench.

Fold your throw lengthwise into thirds.

Then fold it in half. Now fold it into thirds.

Stack them on top of each other in odd numbers. (See my post about grouping things in odd numbers HERE)

FOLDED AND DRAPED

Fold your throw in thirds and then in half and drape it over the arm or back of a chair or sofa.

This is a great way to style thinner throws.

Or fold it and hang it over the side of a basket

CASUALLY TOSSED

This is that drapey, casual look that I love for my throws. It’s easiest to do with throws that are a little larger and ‘drapier’.

Grab your throw by the top corner so you’re holding it diagonally.

(When you lay your throw from corner to corner, it’ll drape better and you’ll get those nice flowy folds because the fabric is on the bias. And you get more length!)

Standing at the left foot of the bed, gently toss/lay the corner of the throw toward the middle of the bed.

Adjust the folds so it looks natural

Make sure the bottom corner hangs over the bed.

A throw on the bed just adds that extra layer of color and style

For your sofas and chairs, use the same technique of grabbing the top corner then draping it over the back of the sofa or chair. Then let it drape down from there.

Always put your pillows on top of your throw. (See how to decorate with house plants HERE)

And here’s a quick tip for styling a throw in a basket:

Grab the throw by the very center so all the hems/fringe are at the bottom

Fold the top triangle under about 9 inches or so

Now tuck this folded top part into a basket filled with pillows or stacked blankets

and you have a perfectly tossed throw in a basket!

So grab all your quilts and blankets and throws…

fold them

stack them

and toss them

and let’s make all the rooms

cozy and stylish!
