And really finishes off the room.

So in case you were wondering how to hang curtains

I have some tips for you!

  1. START WITH A ‘BEEFY’ ROD

Size matters! Especially if you have large windows. Mr. Redoux and I made these curtain rods from fencing pipe. They’re 1 5/8” diameter. Anything smaller would be too skinny for these windows. And these rods are going to stay straight and never sag!

2. HANG ‘EM HIGH

We have 8 foot ceilings so to give the illusion of more height in the room, we mounted the rods 10 inches above the window. We’ll be installing crown molding soon so the rods will appear even closer to the ceiling.

Be sure you get curtain panels that are long enough to mount well above the window. Many only come 84” long which is not long enough.

3. GO WIDE

To keep your curtains from making your windows look smaller, be sure to mount them wide enough so they clear the window completely when they’re open. This is especially important on patio doors — you want to be able to walk through the door without walking into the curtain.

4. USE CURTAIN RINGS

These curtains were super-easy to hang. They’re from Ikea and they’re the Ritva style. They’re just a flat 100% cotton panel. You can gather them onto the rod OR you can order hooks that just slide into the ribbons on the back and hang them from rings. I prefer using rings because they’re so much easier to open and close than a curtain that’s gathered onto a rod. And I think they look better too!

These rings are 2” (inside diameter) and fit the rods perfectly. Be sure you get rings that have an inside diameter large enough to fit over your rod and have enough room to slide back and forth when you open and close the curtains.

5. KISS THE FLOOR

The best length for curtains or drapes is for them to just skim the floor. Gone are the days of pooling your drapes on the floor. And if they’re too short they just look skimpy. These panels come 98 inches long so I was able to hang them from the rings, pin them up to the exact length they needed to be and then sew the hems.

So if you have bare, boring windows —

Now you know how to hang curtains

So you can totally dress up your room!
