Home Office/Sewing/Workout Room. One Room Three Uses

Did your elementary school have a multipurpose room? Do they still call it that?? That’s what we called them a hundred years ago when I was in school. Ours was a cafeteria/gym/movie room all in one. (They would pull down a big screen from the ceiling and wheel in a cart with a movie projector on it to show movies on celluloid film!) Like I said — a hundred years ago…

Anyway that’s what I would call this room. MULTIPURPOSE.

It makes sense to optimize a space to serve more than one function.

The previous owners (my mom and stepdad) added a 12 x 18 room onto the back of the house. You have to go through the guest room to get to it.

The addition is a great space with lots of light and nice views. I knew this would be the perfect room for my home office.

Here’s what it looked like before

And after…

So my office takes up about half of the space. And that leaves a lot of space on the other side of the room.

I love to work out. And I like to do it at home. For me, if I have to drive to a gym or other place to workout — I just won’t do it. So I need to have a dedicated space to work out at my house.

I do circuit training with weights to a DVD. The floor space I have for that is about 8 x 8 so I have plenty of room. There was already a ceiling fan and wall-mounted air conditioner here so I can flip those on if I need to keep cool.

All I need now is a rug of some kind. And a cushioned pad underneath — the oak floor is hard on me when I do floor work!

The third thing I use this room for is sewing.

That’s the guest room to the left. Eventually, we will install barn doors for our guests to have some privacy. But that’s not needed yet since we’re using that as our bedroom right now.

This is my sewing space.

In our last house, I had a 300 square foot workroom. With a huge cutting table. And tons of storage. It was really a great place to create!

Unfortunately it’s not possible to have a dedicated workroom in this house. But that’s okay. I can still make anything I need in this space. In fact not too long ago I whipped up a sofa slipcover right here.

So I would say the space works just fine.

I keep thread and sewing supplies in the linen covered boxes on the bookshelf. And there’s also extra storage space in the closet on the right.

This room makes me happy. I spend most of my day in it.

From my workouts every morning

To my job 4 days a week at my desk

To my sewing space for making great stuff for the house.
